Detroit Eastern Market Chicken art photo picture - Detroit Eastern Market Flower Day photo picture: The historic Detroit Eastern Market celebrated its 200th birthday in 2004. The Eastern Market has been in its present location since 1891, moving from its original location on Woodward Ave. on the Detroit River and then from its location in Cadillac Square in 1841. From horse-drawn carts to present day semi trucks, farmers have annually hauled tons of fresh produce to Detroit Eastern Market for sale to wholesalers as well as to the general public. An interesting historical tidbit is the fact that before the current location was used for The Eastern Market, Generals Ulysses S. Grant, George Armstrong Custer and John J. Pershing were headquartered in this area and marched troops up and down these same streets. In addition parts of the Underground Railroad went under the Eastern Market through to the Detroit River where escaping slaves were able to make safe haven to Canada.
