BIG ISLAND HAWAII - MOKUA'IKAUA CHURCH photo picture - Big Island Hawaii photo picture photograph - This Big Island Hawaii photo is of Mokua'ikaua Church which was built in 1835. It is the oldest and first founded Christian church in Hawaii. The building's stark architectural style reflects the austerity of the New England missionaries. The church was built from lava stone from the native peoples former temples. The first missionaries sailed from Boston on the brig Thaddeus on October 23, 1819 and arrived in Hawaii at Kailua-Kona, here on the Big Island of Hawaii, on April 4, 1820, where they established their religion and began their conversion of the old religions to their way of thinking. This Big Island Hawaii photo shows the West side of the old historic Mokua'ikaua Church, which is located in downtown Kona on historic Ali'i Drive.
