BELLE ISLE photo picture photo CONSERVATORY
by Jan Kaulins
BELLE ISLE CONSERVATORY picture photo - Detroit Belle Isle Conservatory photo picture photograph art. Detroit Belle Isle photo - Detroit Belle Isle picture for sale: This Belle Isle Conservatory photo was taken late in the winter as Spring was approaching Belle Isle. In this Belle Isle photo we can see the old sundial in the foreground of the approach to the Albert Kahn designed Belle Isle Conservatory. Albert Kahn, a noted Detroit architect, patterned the Belle Isle Conservatory after Thomas Jefferson's Monticello. The Conservatory was opened in 1904--over 100 years ago. It is a Detroit Landmark. In 1953 it was dedicated to Mrs. Ann Scripps Whitcomb who left her 600 plant orchid collection to the City of Detroit.
This structure is now known as the Anna Scripps Whitcomb Conservatory, and it is the permanent home of hundreds of cacti, succulents, ferns, palms, tropical plants and one of the largest orchid displays in the country. The 85-foot tall dome of the palm room, seen in this Belle Isle photo picture, has become a symbol of Belle Isle. (DETROIT PHOTO GALLERY and DETROIT PHOTO ART GALLERY)
