by Jan Kaulins
BIG ISLAND HAWAII - KILAUEA CALDERA picture photo - Big Island Hawaii Kilauea Volcano Caldera photo picture art - This is a dramatic photo of the western half of Halema'uma'u Crater, the legendary home of fire Goddess Pele, a huge volcanic lava crater, found in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park on The Big Island of Hawaii. This Big Island Hawaii crater was filled with flowing molten lava. To give you some idea of the size of this volcanic area, in the distance is the upper edge of The Kilauea Caldera, inside of which this Halema'uma'u Crater sits! Kilauea Volcano's most recent eruption began in 1983 and is till going strong. Though continuous, the The Kilauea lava flow ebbs and flows. Kilauea Volcano sits on the slope of giant Mauna Loa Volcano, but is distinct from it as it has its own seperate magma chamber. (THE BIG ISLAND HAWAII PHOTO ART GALLERY)

The quality of the Jan Kaulins' photographic prints is much higher than we can show within limits of this web site. Slight tonal changes and blurring around the areas of strong contrast are a result of the JPEG compression process, and are not part of the high quality originals. |
