MARIE LAVEAU, or Marie Laveaux, became the most famous and powerful Voodoo Queen in the world, respected and feared by thousands. Born in 1794 she died at age 87 in 1881. Laveau was rumored to have held voodoo rituals behind St. Louis Cathedral in the Vieux Carre, The old French Quarter of New Orleans. Voodoo Queen Marie Laveau had fifteen children and was the first know Voodoo practicitioner to charge for her services.

This hand-colored Limited Edition photograph of The Marie Laveau House of Voodoo in the New Orleans French Quarter shows where current Voodoo Queens still sell 'gris gris', charms and potions to aid in the casting of magic spells. There's a famous song titled 'Marie Laveaux' that starts out-- "Down in Lou'siana where the black trees grow, Live a voodoo lady named Marie Laveaux. She got a black cat tooth and a mojo bone, And anyone wouldn't leave her alone. She go GREEEEEEE.... Another man done gone. She live in a swamp in a hollow log, With a one-eyed snake and a three-legged dog. She got a bent bony body and stringy hair, And if she ever seen you messin/ round there, She go GREEEEEE...Another man done gone..." Lyrics by Shel Silverstein. This New Orleans photo of Marie Leveaux The House of Voodoo shows a bit of the mystical side of New Orleans culture.
