In this artistic Mackinac Bridge photo we are on the shore of Mackinac City, Michigan, at the very top of Michigan's Lower Peninsula, looking North towards Michigan's beautiful Upper Penninsula. A lone wooden bench sits on the deserted golden sand beach as waves gently lap across the shore. An ancient driftwood log sits to the left of the bench with wind blown grasses in the foreground. The morning sky is turquoise blue with rims of pink clouds in the distance.
The Mackinac Bridge is currently the third longest suspension bridge in the world, and the longest suspension bridge in the Western Hemisphere.The total length of the Mackinac Bridge is 26,372 feet. The length of the suspension bridge (including anchorages) is 8,614 feet. The length from cable bent pier to cable bent pier is 7,400 feet. Length of main span (between towers) is 3,800 feet.
The bridge opened to traffic on November 1, 1957 according to schedule, despite the many hazards of marine construction over the turbulent Straits of Mackinac. The Mackinac Bridge is celebrating its 50th Anniversary and stands as one of the finest engineering structures in the world. This beautiful 50th Anniversary Mackinac Bridge photo is done in tribute of that historic occasion.
