THE NATIONAL THEATRE photo picture - DETROIT, MICHIGAN NATIONAL THEATRE photograph art print picture photo: This Detroit Photo Gallery historic old Detroit National Theatre picture photo is made from an original hand-colored black and white photograph of this historic downtown Detroit National Theatre, designed by noted architect Albert Kahn, and built in the 1911 in downtown Detroit. This Detroit old National Theatre photo is a picture of one of the oldest surviving Detroit theatre buildings still standing. The grandiose Egyptian style architecture with its capped minarettes is a beautiful work of stonemasonry and art nouveau/ art deco design. The Detroit Michigan National Theatre opened in 1911 on The Monroe Street Theatre District as a vaudeville house, but soon switched to movies. In its 1940's and 1950's The National Theatre it was the last operating burlesque venue in Detroit. In the 1960's it changed it's name to The Palace Theatre and was operated as an adult movie theatre until 1975 when it closed it's doors for the last time. The former old Detroit National Theatre, or The old Detroit Palace Theatre, sits on Monroe St. near Detroit's Greektown district, boarded up and abandoned. With the recent downtown theatre district revival there have been rumors of possible revival of this historic Detroit National Theatre building. The Detroit Hard Rock Cafe is just a half block down from this building, as is the World Headquarters for computer giant Compuware Corporation.
