Detroit Public Library Mural - Man's Mobility 1905
Photo #386 (Use this photo number when ordering)
by Jan Kaulins
DETROIT PUBLIC LIBRARY Mural titled MAN'S MOBILITY 1905. This is one of the three fabulous murals identifying Michigan with a century of developments in transportation by nationally recognized artist John S. Coppin. Coppin wrote about this set of three murals 'Man's will and his creative imagination have impelled him ever onward, thus has come new knowledge understanding. peace, dignity and fulfillment.' This mural of 1905 shows the transitional time from horses to the horseless carriage--a major development in technology that changed our world. The artist has beautifully captured this image with rearing horses and being spooked by a fire and smoke breathing iron horse. In Detroit, this lesser known series of murals (tucked away on the 3rd floor of the Library) compares in scope to the grandeur to the Diego Rivera murals.

The quality of the Jan Kaulins' photographic prints is much higher than we can show within limits of this web site. Slight tonal changes and blurring around the areas of strong contrast are a result of the JPEG compression process, and are not part of the high quality originals. |
