BELLE ISLE AQUARIUM picture photo art print Detroit photography for sale. Detroit Belle Isle Aquarium photo print photograph art for sale. The Belle Isle Aquarium in Detroit was designed by noted architect Albert Kahn, who designed many other assorted style structures around Detroit. Belle Isle Aquarium opened it's doors to the public on Aug. 18, 1904. This color detail photo of top of the front main entrance to The Belle Isle Aquarium is made from an original black and white photograph that was hand-colored by noted artist/photographer Jan Kaulins.
The exterior of the unique structure of The Belle Isle Aquarium was most noted for its Gothic style entrance. The highly decorated stone facade incorporated two fish spitting and the enblem of The City of Detroit. Beneath that, the word AQUARIUM was carved into the stone with the face of Neptune, the Greek God of Water. The facade and the front of this historic building would soon become covered with vines, giving it a more rustic appeal and appearance.
In the 1950's the aquarium was slightly updated and remodeled, which is pretty much how it looked until 2005 when the doors were finally closed on this historic Detroit landmark after having been operating for over 100 years. At the time of it's closing it had been the oldest existing acquarium in the United States. This artistic photo is a tribute to the legacy of this once most popular and wonderful Detroit landmark.
